Back in 2009, when I was listening to the Lord for the details of this new men’s ministry He was inviting me to enter into, one of the major focal points was men’s small groups. Now, of course, this is no new concept at all, but I was already convinced it was one of the strongest resources that I’d ever seen God use for consistent spiritual growth in men. There’s just something powerful about a handful of men meeting only because of Jesus and allowing Him to work in and through them, with and for each other. The bottom line—a Christian man in a small group is far more likely to change into the image of Christ than an isolated man.
As I studied Scripture passages that would encourage and challenge men, I re-discovered Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, 12.
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work:If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!. . . Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. —Ecclesiastes 4:9-10,12 NIV
As I read the power in this passage of 3 cords being strengthened by coming together, I coined the phrase: 3 Strand Group or 3SG. I began to brand and resource men’s small groups as 3SG, using this Scripture as the foundation. As a result, from California to New York, there are 3SG’s meeting. And 3SG also stands for Three Strong Guys!
The 3SG Men’s Ministry Manual is a 13-week study, perfect for new groups starting out. The FAQ section in the front of the book takes you through a very simple and practical “how-to” to start your group, then the individual weekly studies contain Scripture, discussion questions, and thoughts on topics for guys. The 13 studies actually carry you through the things you need to know to be in a group together such as prayer, accountability, and being brothers in Christ. A list of offensive and defensive accountability questions are included in the back of the book. If you want simple, user-friendly, and straight-forward, this is it.
After 30+ years in ministry and the last 12 being spent discipling and mentoring men, while raising two sons, I have gained a strong base of knowledge regarding ministry to guys. I offer that experience to coach ministers, lay-leaders, and churches as they start or re-engage a men’s ministry. I can help your church or ministry through calls and Skype sessions or on-site consulting.
